Help us gather the history of Cerebral Palsy Midlands!
Here at Cerebral Palsy Midlands, our History group have been invited to collaborate on an exciting project with the Black Country Living Museum, centred around their Wendy Box. For those who may not know, the Wendy Box was a charity collection box created in the 1950s to encourage public donations.
The box depicted a young girl with cerebral palsy called Wendy. They were originally created with good intentions, however attitudes since have shifted, and soon the boxes were regarded as patronising and offensive in the way they protrayed disability. The boxes were phased out from 1979, but they remain an important reminder of how perceptions of disability and fundraising have changed over time. We are veyr much looking forward to learning more through this research project and contributing our perspective as part of CPM's proud history. If you would like to know more about the research being conducted by the Black Country Living Museum, details can be found on the Black Country Living Museum website bclm.com/explore/collections/wendybox/

Alongside this collaboration, our History group are continuing its work towards producing a book that will capture the rich history of Cerebral Palsy Midlands. Our research draws a wide range of original sources, including letters, meeting minutes, legal papers, year books, photographs, and many other documents from the time CPM first began. These materials are helping us to build a detailed and authentic record of our story. The book will celebrate our journey and achivements and is planned for publication in 2027 to mark CPM's 80th anniversary.

We are always looking for more people to join us in recording and sharing these important stories. If you would like to get involved with our History Group, please get in touch, we would love to welcome you to the team! Written by Lauren Leigh-Thomas
