We at Cerebral Palsy Midlands are excited to celebrate World CP Day with our amazing community! For World CP Day this year we want to draw attention to how diverse the people in our community are and draw attention to their unique qualities that make them who they are but also what makes our community so vibrant and abundant.

Monday 6th October #UniqueAndUnited

To celebrate this special day, we chatted with people about what cerebral palsy means to them and how it affects their lives. It was heartwarming to hear each person's unique story! Today, we join together to honour the achievements, resilience, and voices of the 50 million individuals around the world living with cerebral palsy.

This years World CP day Campaign #UniqueAndUnited

We asked Hamzah, who is a regular attendee at CPM and enjoys participating in the pottery sessions, how he was going to be celebrating 'World CP Day'. Hamzah, being somebody that describes themselves as an avid gamer and a ‘nerd’, said that he “might do a livestream for 'World CP Day' … I’m also a Youtuber, I love the technical aspects of it. I’m nerdy, geeky etc”.

Continued: When asked what he was most proud of as somebody with Cerebral Palsy, he replied, “Technology is a part of me and I’m proud of it … it makes me proud of being a technology nerd”. Hamzah related that this is something that makes him solely unique and that this is a part of him that he is deeply proud of, something that he loves to embrace. He emphasised that “Just because I have cerebral palsy it doesn’t mean that I’m not normal”. He continued and said “I do things my own way. I adapt like with the key buttons on my PlayStation PS5 controller. I do this to suit my own needs and requirements”.

Our citizens and their perspectives

Ben also thoroughly enjoys the pottery sessions here at CPM. When asked how he would describe himself, Ben stated that he is “funny, happy, upbeat, and nosy”.

Continued: When also questioned about how CB affects him, Ben said that he is not supposed to walk on his own, that he often needs a walker, but he does race down the corridor to the pottery room here at the centre even though he isn’t supposed to.
We asked another citizen at the centre called James what is one thing he wishes people understood about living with CP? James responded with “I wish people knew I could dance really fast, and swim really fast. Although cerebral palsy does make me a bit wobbly, I still have the ability to function like everybody else does”.

Unique and United

For World CP Day, what we can take from these snippets of our conversations is that people with CP are deeply unique in the ways that the disability affects each of them, but they are united in our support of it and our love for how it renders them unique and therefore diverse. The conversations today gave us a glimpse into the varied and beautiful souls who make up our lovely community.

We hope that you will all get your green on for World CP Day!!!
